 The etymology of the word martial is derived from Mars the Roman god of war. Thus martial art literally means the Arts of Mars. The actual practice and study of combat goes back to what I would suspect the first humans. It is easily traced into ancient China, Greece and Egypt. Where ever humans came into conflict with other humans the study of combat and defending ones self and loved ones was sure to be found.
 Martial arts is the study of the arts of Mars and one might look at that and think that it is simply learning to be violent. Quite the contrary! There are many components to these arts. Honor, integrity, virtue and discipline are coupled together to form a foundation of character and morals.
I have been blessed many times over from my studies of martial arts. It is the study of martial arts that eventually lead me to studying and becoming a Rolfer. As a student of martial arts it is my responsibility but also a blessing to pass on this knowledge. An honor to the many that came before as well as those that will come after me that have bled and given their lives to refine and pass this knowledge along to the point I was able to receive these teachings.
